Megan Powers MD & Katherine Schaffer MD — Identifying Human Trafficking Patients
Operations (BLS 15/ALS 20) – 2 hr
This course is an in-person presentation that is geared to preparing EMS personnel to identify and respond to human trafficking. The course goes over the basics of what human trafficking is, the different types, the risk factors, and varying clinical presentations. Additionally, the course will provide practical steps to provide care, use proper documentation practices and reporting, while ensuring safety for both the patient and EMS team.

Session 2: 1015-1115
Adrian Proumen D.O. — Avoid Airway Disaster
Airway (BLS 11/ALS 16) – 1 hr
Based on the concept of the Vortex Approach to airway management, this talk will focus on practical techniques to prevent peri-intubation disaster namely: hypotension, hypoxia. The Vortex Approach, as originally developed by Dr. Nicholas Chrimes, is a point of care cognitive aid to help providers of all levels focus on the essentials of airway management. At the end of the talk, learners will be able to understand the principles of the Vortex Approach to airway management and how it works within their existing protocols, understand and identify physiologically difficult airways and identify common causes of peri-intubation hypoxia and hypotension and tools to optimize patient’s during the course of airway management.

Session 3: 1230-1330
Megan J. Buchholz — Maternal Hypertension
Cardiac (BLS 12/ALS 17) – 1 hr
Hypertension (HTN) is the most encountered disorder during pregnancy. High blood pressure has a negative impact on the mother and the fetus, which is why early diagnosis and proper control are mandatory to avoid complications. There are many forms of HTN disorder during pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia syndrome is a severe form of gestational HTN, which is only curable by delivery of the fetus.  Management of HTN during pregnancy is challenging and it requires careful collaboration between EMS, obstetricians, and cardiologists.

Sabrina Werner, MSN, RN,  — Stroke Awareness
Cardiac (BLS 12/ALS 17) – 1 hr
Stroke Program Coordinators are responsible for overall hospital stroke program management in collaboration with the Stroke Medical Director. The Stroke Program Coordinator provides professional, clinical nursing, and technical knowledge, skills, and expertise required for the provision and continuity of comprehensive neurological and stroke patient care.

Session 5: 1500-1630
Ashley Fox MD — Tachycardia and Bradycardia
Cardiac (BLS 12/ALS 17) – 1 hr
Join us to learn about the challenges of dealing with patients with heartrate extremes.  We will explore what happens when your heart rate falls out of the Goldilocks zone – either too fast or too slow.  Providers will be able to implement communication techniques, describe a proactive approach to advance care planning, and demonstrate active management for people living with dementia.
